5 science fiction art books

Here's a list of my favorites.

1. The art of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back

All the books in this series are good (old and new) but Empire is my favorite. Ralph Mquarrie and Joe Johnston did some of their best work for the second Star Wars movie. The model shots and matte paintings in this one are also great.

2. Painted Space

I know of two John Berkey Books (the other is the more recent one from Paper Tiger) but I like this one a little more. It includes some really nice preliminary sketches that I havn't seen anywhere else.

3. Mass

This is the only John Harris book I've seen, and its great.

4. Oblagon

Oblagon covers the majority of Syd Mead's most famous film work (Bladerunner, Tron, 2010). All very ground breaking stuff!

5. Ma.K.

Kow Yokoyama designed the Maschinen Krieger world. His design sense is somewhere between Moebius and WWII tanks. Lots of organic forms.

Personal sketch

I've been looking for time to do something fun for a while. Finally found a couple nights away from freelance and everything else. Subject is same old, but its for fun after all.

My personal stuff always ends up looking like Star Wars...

Here's a recent illustration for Magic:The Gathering for a card called "Wall of Bone". First image is the initial sketch, second is final.

A more typical step by step would be less straightforward. Here is a rare example where my final image looks pretty much like the initial sketch. This one was for Arenanet.
